Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)

ICP & Targeting
Definition
An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is a description of the company that gets the most value from your product — defined by firmographic, technographic, and behavioral attributes. An ICP answers the question: what kind of organization should we build for? It is not a buyer persona (that describes an individual decision-maker). An ICP describes the account. The best ICPs are narrow enough to exclude bad fits and grounded in data, not intuition — built from your highest-LTV customers, not your ideal self-image.

Why it matters

Without an ICP, your outbound motion spends time on companies that will never convert, your enrichment budget covers irrelevant accounts, and your SDR team has no shared definition of a qualified target. An ICP turns your GTM engine from a scattergun into a rifle.

Example

A conference data provider's ICP might be 'B2B SaaS companies with 50–500 employees and an outbound sales team that attends at least four US conferences per year.' That set of attributes — headcount, motion, event behavior — defines a segment where the product delivers measurable ROI.

How Impossible Data helps

Impossible Data's ICP-shaped filtering lets you narrow any conference attendee list to accounts that match your ICP — by industry, headcount, seniority, and more — before your SDRs start outreach.
